What should we call maybe tumblr

It will certainly not bring you back. But at least it will allow me to find peace someday, knowing that wherever you are right now, you are never truly far. It clings to the tips of my fingers, staining everything I touch. My cup of luke-warm tea, the letter I wrote you, his hands. Your cautious smile in a photograph, slowly fading like we are.

And I hope you find someone who is to you what you were to me. I just want you to miss me. Only a little. I had some contacts at Verizon that I pinged separately. Then there was a diligence process to try to find out as much information as you can about the business. You talk about possible outcomes. You just kind of figure out what works best for both sides.

We always approach deals from kind of a win-win. We both interacted with the Tumblr folks, and it is kind of Verizon running the process.

They have some extremely experienced corporate development and lawyers and everything. Some of the agreements that came over were like whoa! The team at Automattic is very tiny but powerful, and we worked really, really hard to make this happen. There was an exclusive period and then the deadline, and we got everything signed up on Sunday. We are all signed. One of the things that really surprised me is I thought — as probably many do — that Tumblr had kind of died under its variety of corporate parents.

And then actually being able to see some of the numbers, including some the numbers post-when they changed the adult content policy. The people who love Tumblr use it every day. They have more daily active users than WordPress. In terms of what we want to do, one thing that also impressed me was just the team, the people who are still there and working on Tumblr are really passionate about their community, about what this offer could do.

Tumblr pioneered a lot of what later would show up on Twitter, Instagram, WordPress, all sorts of other places. So I would love for Tumblr to become a social alternative. I think you want to call it Facebook. Is that your goal? To go right at Facebook and Twitter with Tumblr? No, not at all. We have a long track record with these things, including building a lot of trust in an open-source community, which, by the way, is usually also very skeptical of any company at all.

But really I would love for people to judge us by our actions over the next 18 months. Call it two months to close. Nilay Patel: Obviously, Verizon decided that adult content was going away. Just have a web version. So their app is a big part of how people interact with it. They really look for it. And if they find something, you can be taken down. App stores can be kind of fickle.

Not capricious, but it sometimes feels a little arbitrary. There was definitely spam. I was more active Tumblr user eight or nine years ago, and when I logged back to check it out, my feed was full of nude pictures that were linking to a spam site. Spam, essentially. There is lots and lots of shades of gray in between, and I do definitely want to learn more.

You could do that stuff on the web. You could evolve the content policy and make it maybe less restrictive there. Because both have tons of adult content. I believe Reddit has a setting you do on the web, but then if you turn that off, you can get more adult stuff in the app? I will say that, overall, a really thriving home for adult content is probably best for a company or a website which is totally dedicated to it.

I know a bunch of sites popped up after the policy change in December, so I mean that might be a better future versus someplace where there might be a gray line or an evolving policy. When heavy-handed moderation is put in place, you not only limit expression, you run the risk of alienating the creators — like when top YouTubers like PewDiePie began to rebel against the platform after advertisers withdrew over content they found objectionable.

Advertisers, ultimately, are part of the problem. The general thinking in the rise of social networks was that if you make stuff that gets a lot of attention or, better yet, own the real estate on which others are making stuff for free , brands will put their ads next to it. But with a small handful of exceptions, the advertising riches never really materialized. Maybe more importantly, Tumblr and Vine and the like never had data-mining operations as sophisticated as, say, Facebook.

For much of its life, Facebook aggressively trafficked not in collecting rage comics and funny video clips, but in collecting bland lists of favorite movies and where you went to college — personal information that it can use to target ads with alarming specificity.

But the truth is that running a platform for culture creation is, increasingly, a charity operation undertaken by larger companies. Servers are expensive, and advertisers would rather just throw money at Facebook than take a chance on your weird, problematic network. Generating and incubating internet culture has little market value in and of itself.

Which means Tumblr has to hope for patience and kindness from Verizon while it seeks a way to make money. The next hubs of internet culture will learn from the mistakes of the past decade, hopefully by doing one of two things: developing a way to collect revenue directly from its audience, like Twitch or Patreon allow now, or by eschewing the notion of a sustainable business at all.

Would you like to use Tumblr like the pros? Learn some keyboard shortcuts. Keyboard shortcuts are always a surefire way to speed up your workflow and increase your productivity. If you want to make your content shine, you should create your own custom URL.

Then click the pencil icon, move the slider next to Use a custom domain, and enter your preferred web address. Similar to Facebook and TweetDeck, Tumblr gives you the ability to schedule posts for the future. The schedule function is divided into two parts: queue and schedule.

When creating a new post, Schedule allows you to specify the exact time and date that the post should be published. A queue is a list of posts that go live on a pre-defined schedule. To change your queue settings, go to Profile.

You can change the number of posts queued in a day and limit the posts to specific hours. As you become more familiar with the Tumblr platform, you may regret some of your previous posts. Not necessarily because the content is awful, but because you made content management mistakes. You may not have tagged your posts properly or posted a picture with a poor title.

You can use the mega editor to solve the problems without having to delete anything. You can select posts and edit a lot of data simultaneously. Therefore, you should not overestimate this advantage. More interesting for companies is the opportunity to place sponsored ads. In fact, you can expect little competition from competitors on Tumblr, and you can gain advantages over competitors who have not yet discovered all benefits of the platform.

If you manage to use popular Tumblr topics and establish yourself as a player on the platform, you can generate viral posts on Tumblr faster and more effectively than on any other platform. Posts with hundreds and thousands of reblogs are not uncommon, because the visitor does nothing but scans dozens of posts at breakneck speed. This way, your Tumblr activity can therefore boost your overall social media activity.
