Why sports are bad

It happens at boxing matches and even in college sports in America. Hooliganism also happens between countries — every time England play Germany it renews memories of the Second World War. Violent fans have also been a problem at the African Cup of Nations and even at cricket matches.

Sport gives us role models to look up to and try to copy. This is very important for young people from poor backgrounds who may have little hope. They can see how sports stars have made it out of bad situations through hard work and their own abilities. For those from minorities, athletes may be the only positive role models from their ethnic group they see on the television.

Sports stars are bad role models for young people to follow. Many behave badly, on the field and off, and so set a bad example to children. But even those who behave well are not good examples to follow.

Children who hero-worship them could easily come to think that sport is more important than working hard in school. It is also bad that sport is seen as the best way for people from ethnic minorities to become well known.

Sport has lots of social benefits. Sports programmes can give people a positive purpose and something to do. Small amounts of money spent on supporting sports have been shown to reduce crime a lot. In schools periods of activity doing sports send children back to their desks with better focus on their work.

On a larger scale, sport can also be at the centre of efforts at urban renewal. Many cities have used a new sports stadium to draw people back to run down areas.

Other businesses have followed the sports fans. Over time this investment pays off in higher tax revenues for the city. Sport today is about money rather than taking part. Greed has ruined any good that was once in sport. Success for professional teams now depends upon having a rich owner who can buy up talented players. By focusing exclusively on talent at younger levels, coaches risk overlooking emerging stars, says Eoin McGrath, who played hurling for Waterford for more than a decade, and is still involved in coaching at club level.

But by 14 or 15, that kid will have caught up, and he might discover a real talent for it. Unders camogie coach at Clontarf GAA, Eoghan Hannigan — who, like his wife Helen, is a former elite rower — makes a point of rewarding the kids who turn up for camogie practice every week with a place on the team for matches, even if that means those with more natural ability and less dedication have to sit on the bench.

The example of Olympian Annalise Murphy shows that fostering a love of the sport is more important than handing out medals, says Treasa Cox of the Irish Sailing Association. Annalise succeeded because she was the one who put in the hard graft. The coaches are volunteers. The referees are human. The entire GAA works by relying on people who are willing to contribute towards the parish in whatever way that is needed so that the team succeeds. McGrath comes from a family deeply immersed in sport — he and his brother Ken both played for Waterford, as did their father, Pat.

But he says the only pressure the brothers felt was what they put on themselves. We always had to impress him. The reality is that not everybody is going to play intercounty hurling or premiership soccer.

But not every parent wants to accept that. The advice often given to parents is that kids should do one gymnastics-type activity, one athletic sport and one ball sport. But the reality is that team sports are not for every child, especially the ones who find themselves standing on the sidelines week after week.

Competitive youth sports can be very time consuming. When a child or teen athlete goes from the recreational level to the competitive level in any sport, free time becomes harder to find.

Conditioning requirements, nights and weekends being booked with games, travel and daily practices, altogether leave most competitive youth athletes little to no time to participate in any other sort of activities. Between fees, equipment, travel, etc. The emotional commitment to a competitive team sport, beyond time and money, can also be great. If not managed, the stress can lead to a host of larger psychological problems and harmful behaviors such as anxiety, substance and alcohol use, steroid use, and eating disorders.

Some kids love to play soccer every day — all day. Some just practice twice per week and use soccer as an alternative sport. I believe any sport has to be fun. If your child does not have fun, he or she will fall behind in their development and ultimately quit the sport. The higher their enjoyment the more the athlete will invest their own time and will succeed. It is good to read an article putting another viewpoint.
