But the judges are also locked in their own battle against each other. Instead of making it to the top though, they're mentoring and helping their team members win the competition. A judge "wins" when a member of his or her team wins "The Voice. The Blind Audition. The competition includes four phases this season. The first is the "Blind Audition," in which the judges build their teams, which have 16 spots each. Contestants audition to join one of the coaches' teams, but with a twist - the judges never see the contestant.
Their chairs are turned away from the stage, so they can only judge the contestant based on his or her voice alone. If any of the coaches like what they hear, they can press a red button on their chair that spins it around so it faces the stage.
If one coach chooses the singer, than the contestant becomes a member of that coach's team. But if more than one coach turns their chair, the performer gets to decide which team to join.
At this point, it's not unusual for contestants to ask the coaches what they would do for them or for coaches to sweet-talk the performer and make their case. If more than one coach pushes the button, the power then shifts to the artists to choose which coach they want to work with.
If no one pushes their button, the artist is eliminated from the competition. Also returning this season is the block, which adds another layer of coach competition during the Blind Auditions. The coach chairs each have an extra set of buttons with the other three coaches' names on them, which prevents a coach from adding a new artist to his or her team.
The coaches can only use their block buttons on one artist for the entire first round of the competition. The blocked coach only discovers they are blocked if they press their button, and though their chair will still turn, their lane lights up with "BLOCKED. Once the teams are set, the battle is on.
The coaches dedicate themselves to developing their team of artists, giving them advice and sharing the secrets of their success, along with help from their celebrity advisors.
