Trips are often only for a few hours: journeys tend to be longer. Lets face it, there are no hard and fast rules or even broad agreement about this. You can use a variety of these words in the same contexts, except you should use trip with anything to do with school!
DonnyB said:. I suspect the real answer is that " school trip " C is a firmly established phrase in BE at least. Just google 'trip or journey'. But as I implied in post 13, a "journey" can be of any length, frequency or duration. Last edited: Dec 22, NOT in Australia! Of all these words, journey is the one that carries the most figurative value.
I'm quoting Destination B2 by Macmillan, 'journey-an occasion when you travel from one place to another, especially over a long distance'. If the journey 'can be of any length', why do they say most of the time it's over a long distance? I'm sorry - I didn't mean to be rude. Then what about the phrase 'round-the-world journey'? Is it the same as 'round - the-word trip'? I found the same definition as the one provided in my textbook in the Macmillan Dictionary.
They also say 'journey ' usually refers to long distances. Ok, but then why do we have phrases such as 'long journey' , 'short journey ', etc. I think Macmillan, in the effort to be exhaustive enough, gave a not very good definition, or at least this is my opinion. Do you agree? Thomas1 Senior Member polszczyzna warszawska. I'm wondering if the definition of 'journey' provided by the textbook doesn't have its origin in the word's etymological meaning.
The word 'journey' has been used to mean, among other things, 'a day of e. I imagine that travelling over one day, one can cover a long distance, which in itself can be rather subjective or change over times. For instance, to people in the Middle Ages a distance of 30 miles could be long, and it might have taken them a day's travelling.
Today, it wouldn't be so to many people given the modern means of transport. A trip usually involves you going to a place and back again; a journey is usually one-way. It is often short in time, even if it is long in distance. Journey is more often used when the travelling takes a long time and is difficult. Obviously, it's a difference between BrE and AmE.
A journey can mean any trip, or time when you travel, it can even be a 'journey through life'. A tour is a period of travel where you see a defined area.
While there I will take a few short trips, perhaps an excursion to Edinburgh. When my journey is complete I will write an article on Facebook. See a translation.
Kevoconnor: thank you. Kevoconnor : thank you. It can sometimes also refer to an arduous or hazardous one, which is planned extensively. For example, an expedition to the South Pole can be an arduous journey, which needs to be well-planned. Read the following sentences to understand the meaning of expedition in different contexts. The kingdom was thrown into chaos when the crown prince was killed on a hunting expedition.
Such an arderous expedition requires enormous bravery and courage. In the past ten years, there have been six research expeditions to that area.
For instance, just imagine that you are a fashion designer in France for a tour. Then planning an excursion to Paris is something that really needs to be done because Paris is the heart of fashion where you have so much to explore in terms of fashion and style. In brief, excursions offer you first-hand experiences and provide you with the chance to dive into a new culture, promising you a much more effective learning experience as a whole.
In brief, the term tour refers to a period of travel where you see a defined area, whereas an excursion is a day outing made usually by a group of people to have fun which is often an adjunct to a longer journey or a tour. The time spent on an excursion is usually less than the time period taken to complete a tour. You can engage in excursions while you are on tour. The purpose of a tour or an excursion may differ from one person to another.
However, basically, a tourist may look for pleasure, relaxation, education, business, sports, etc. A tour requires pre-planning and preparation, so it takes more time to plan a tour.
